shortly before the turn of the year 2017/18, my friend jan müller wrote me an e-mail: »dear martin, i ll send you the new album of my band ›dirty dishes‹ now. the album is titled ›kabinett von papen‹. it is a concept album, which has the third-last government cabinet of the weimar republic as a subject. so, please tell me how you see it – whatever your verdict, i ll use it as an incentive to put my mind and body in the service of global pop culture even more so in the future«.

el deux is the swiss electro-pop trio of gutze gautschi (guitar, vocals), steno onetz (bass), martin kraft (vocals, drum machine). formed circa 1981 in aarau by gutze and steno who played together in punk/new wave band fresh color aka frische farbe featuring a pre-yello dieter meier. gutze?s minimal electronic compositions did not fit the concept of fresh color, so they formed a new project with their live mixer, martin kraft, on vocals.

when michaela meise performed at westgermany at kottbusser tor in berlin-kreuzberg on march 20, 2015, accompanying herself on the accordion, i was perplexed. i knew her first album from 2010, which was about hymns (»preis dem todesüberwinder«, originally released on clouds hill, available as a download and stream through my label from july 2018 on), but what she was playing weren’t spiritual songs?! i wanted to put this music out on my label: the songs sounded sad, aloof and wistful but also proud, determined and unerring. the album title »i am greek« is a tribute to melina mercouri’s album »je suis grecque!«, which was released in 1971 when mercouri was deprived of citizenship by the greek military junta. mercouri lived – like mikis theodorakis and many other cultural workers – in exile. meise’s album is dedicated to the chanson scene of post-war europe, whose songs were popularly folksy, but also political. some talk about the experience of war, the shoah and labor migration.

he might have lived a century and a half ago, but antonín leopold dvo&#345,,,ák resonates on. in 2014, the deutsche symphonie- orchester recorded parts of his ninth symphony and released them into the wild for the masses to cut up, stretch out, and have their way with. this is the result of one such experiment. ludwig zibell and martin schmitz translate dvo&#345,,,ák’s operatic dramatism into a techno moodiness that sees the coming together of two unlikely worlds. alex ketzer’s 5 am reduction is a dubbed-out remix of the remix that plays out and dwells upon some of the moments you might miss listening to it in the orchestra. finally these strange, otherworldly meditations upon music from another time see a vinyl release.

following the u.s. army’s liberation of munich in may 1945, the world’s first amerikahaus was inaugurated there with a library, a magazine reading room, a children’s library, a record and lm department, and lecture and seminar rooms, together with a concert hall and exhibition space. up to 80.000 people a month utilized the offerings of amerikahaus during its early years. beginning in 1953, the united states information agency (usia), an institution founded as an instrument of the cold war, began to finance amerikahaus. in addition to representing the u.s., its principal task in west germany was to democratize and denazify the postwar population. after the beginning of the cold war, many of these re-educative measures also served as propaganda in a programmatic linking of democratic and economic principles meant to strengthen transatlantic relations against the communist bloc. in 1997, the u.s. government concluded its work at amerikahaus in munich and shipped almost all its items back to the states. however, 1.630 long-playing vinyl records from the library were left behind in cardboard boxes in the basement. when michaela melián looked through this forgotten collection, one of the first things she came across was don gillis’ 1940 tone poem »portrait of a frontier town«, whose second movement is entitled »where the west begins«. don gillis, a composer and radio producer, used the musical styles and genres of that decade to create an explicitly american program music. michaela melián’s »music from a frontier town« is fueled by the diverse sonic material of this extensive record collection once considered as an instrument of cultural education. this record has been produced in addition to melián’s twenty-four hour performative music installation »music from a frontier town« in the garage of what is now the bavarian center for transatlantic relations at karolinenplatz, munich (4-5 may 2018).

martin kohlstedt wollte erst erfinder werden, dann astronaut, später physiker, entwickelte interaktive märchen, science-fiction hörbücher und pflanzenroboter. nun ist er musiker und hat ein solo piano album aufgenommen. tag ist ein rückzugsort, ist sehnsucht, ist ein vorausmusizieren des nächsten schrittes, ist filmhaftes schaupspiel und drang nach definition und erklärung. nach unterricht in interaktivem klavier, filmmusiken, verbindungen in projekte des erfurter zughafens und expeditionen in elektronische musik mit dem kollektiv marbert rocel ist tag die erste solo veröffentlichung von martin kohlstedt. ein intimer einblick in die nächte, das verarbeiten des musikers. reduziert auf klavier entstehen hinerzählte landschaften und skizzenhaft gemalte kompositionen. der extrem minimale ansatz, die schönheit in den detailverliebt arrangierten figuren, die karge mathematische ausformung einzelner sequencen werden zum sog. tag ist zeitraffer und super slow motion zu gleichen teilen.

ziemlich genau ein jahr ist nun seit der veröffentlichung seines letzten albums nacht vergangen. seitdem hat martin kohlstedts mut, den dialog zu suchen, anscheinend überzeugt, denn das resultat sind acht sehr unterschiedliche stücke von künstlern aus deutschland, island, großbritannien und den usa. manche wirken wie ein feinfühliger kommentar zum original, andere sind komplett verschiedene perspektiven auf das ausgangsmaterial. und einige sind zum anlass für gemeinsame projekte geworden, in denen man sich auf augenhöhe etwas vollkommen neuem widmet -allesamt der idee folgend, dass kohlstedts musik nicht fest geschrieben ist, sondern fortwährend in verhandlung.

martin kohlstedts zweites album nacht (2014) bezieht sich direkt auf den vorgänger und ist dennoch die verkehrung seiner perspektive nach innen. hat der komponist in tag (2012) noch verspielt fragen gestellt, folgen jetzt in aller konsequenz neun monologe. diese reduzierten stücke sprechen mit einer unterdrückten ruhelosigkeit, distanzieren sich aber vermehrt vom leichtfertigen. in ihnen arbeitet kohlstedt hart an sich selbst, repetition und rhythmische verwandlungen entwickeln eine nach innen gerichtete dynamik. aus dem entstehenden sog befreit sich die -nacht- immer wieder neu, selbst in ihren schwerfälligsten momenten. und unterbewusst möchte man daran glauben, sich festhalten an diesem gerüst, noch während es anschlag für anschlag konstruiert wird. ein ankommen ist für martin kohlstedt aber noch utopie, die nacht erzählt vom suchen nach einem passenden ort dafür. sie ist deswegen nicht immer leicht zugänglich vertraut sich aber ihren hörern bedingungslos an. persönlicher können moderne kompositionen nicht werden.

the martinez brothers return to their own cuttin headz label with a new two track ep. joint custody features collaborations with jerome sydenham, mathew jonson and martin buttrich. first track no pop is a 12 minute acid-influenced workout, channelling both the martinez brothers and sydenhams taste for faster-paced dancefloor-ready basslines alongside jonsons ear for the surreal high-pitched chirps pitch down into classic acid stabs whilst a metallic distorted vocal echoes above clapping hi-hats. affection deficit disorder alongside martin buttrich continues this sense of quirkiness, the titles eponymous acronym repeated over a darker, grooving bassline and spacey keys. the duos final collaboration with the producer, 9 pound hammer appears as a bonus third track on the vinyl release. the joint custody ep is the martinez brothers first release since the incredible success of last years stuff in the trunk featuring miss kittin. the release follows the pairs highly anticipated gig at the launch of landmark new london venue, printworks.

im fluss der neun stücke löst sich der komponist auf und macht musik in ihrer ureigensten dynamik erfahrbar. man wird zeuge davon, wie sich nähe und intimität zu weite und gewalt wandeln, sowie schönheit in alledem zu finden ist - vor allem aber im vergehen. konsequent entwickelt -strom- dabei verschiedenste formwelten, erscheint neblig gefährlich, dann wieder ganz direkt, fast verspielt, bis hin zum erstarren vor der eigenen größe. dabei wurden für -strom- keine pointen erdacht und keinerlei maß genommen. stattdessen wirkt es so, als ob martin kohlstedt es geschafft hätte, der intuition ein monument zu bauen. dabei sind unabänderliche denkmäler gar nicht kohlstedts spezialität, ganz im gegenteil. bekannt geworden ist der thüringer vor allem für die energie und unberechenbarkeit seiner konzerte. nach zwei solo-piano alben legte er schablonen für das instrument ab und entwickelte seine eigene selbstverständlichkeit, elektronik und effekte so zu spielen, als seien sie nur weitere tasten auf der schwarzweißen klaviatur. -strom- ist martin kohlstedts drittes studioalbum und ebenso ein destillat dieser entwicklung wie auch ein blick in die zukunft: bevor der komponist auf sein publikum trifft, prallt er in diesem ersten aller räume mit sich selbst zusammen. inszenierung ist hier fehl am platz. sound und struktur treten hinter den wunsch, mit der musik andere orte zu erreichen. man hört dem nach - seinen händen - die all die arbeit verrichten, feinfühlig und größenwahnsinnig zugleich. und bleibt doch ganz bei sich, wie auf seinen konzerten. mehr braucht man über martin kohlstedt nicht zu wissen.

munichs martin matiske started his recording career at fifteen with his stunning ep stars & galaxy for dj hells gigollo records back in 2002. here he dons 4 fresh tracks for the vivod label with his trademark electro sound, somewhere between dopplereffekt, classical & wave. kicking off the ep is die nibelungen, a sort of speak & spell classical piece with an electro backing track. a2 - bayerischer wald is a chord heavy majestic bomb in a 5/4 time signature, maybe a stretch too far for the linear techno dj but thats what makes this ep so interesting. b2 - virtuosic mechanic harks back to his previous work on gigollo records, a more club orientated track which should do some effective damage on the floor. rounding things off is kammermusik, a subtle electro ballad. if you like your electro with a heavy classical influence then this is your ep.

2 years ago, we celebrated our 10 years with 5 anniversary eps entitled 10 by ten, where we asked 10 of our favorite artists to write an exclusive track for the occasion. two of the stand out tracks were martin iveson - aka atjazz - leave me here as well as art of tones, koniokola, which we thought deserved a second life. freerange and delusions of grandeur boss, jimpster, blesses us with his deep yet driving rendition of leave me here, while fred everything chooses to update koniokola with a more dance floor approach and a strip down dub. we also included the original of leave me here which was never available on vinyl.
